National Grid – Harker Substation News
We wanted to update you as the next phase of works at our substation in Harker continues, including the delivery of a very large piece of equipment to site this week. An SGT converts the voltage of electricity so that it can be safely supplied to homes and businesses.

We are expecting the delivery of our fifth SGT during the late afternoon of Sunday 18 January. The SGT is expected to leave Heysham Port between 8am and 10am. Please note, the date and time of the delivery is subject to change. If there is any change, we will let you know as soon as possible, and updates will be added to the webpage – www.nationalgrid.com/harkersubstation
Following this delivery, we are expecting the final SGT for the project to be delivered in the coming months. We will share information regarding this delivery, once confirmed.
The SGTs are being installed in the extended part of the substation. The work that National Grid is delivering will mean that more renewable and home-grown energy can connect to the transmission network. There will also be additional capacity within the network that developers can access in the future.
We have carefully planned the route with our specialist haulage contractors, Allelys, and the local highway authorities to minimise the disruption to road users. The vehicle will have an escort to help manage traffic and make the process as smooth and safe as possible.
Due to the size of the delivery, we will be using a slow-moving transporter vehicle to ensure that this delivery can take place safely. This will mean there will be some rolling road closures, as the vehicle carrying the equipment travels from Heysham Port north on the M6 and M74 before turning southbound at Gretna Green (at Junction 22 on the M74) and travelling back down the M74/M6 southbound before using the disused southbound slip road from the M6 to travel past the main substation before entering the site.
We expect disruption to our neighbours to be minimal; however the delivery may mean that there are some short delays on local roads, and we apologise for any temporary inconvenience this may cause. We will be keeping local news and radio stations informed of the travel plans for the day.
There will be no impact on your electricity supply while we carry out our work.
As an owner of critical national infrastructure, we at National Grid know that millions of people are relying on us, now more than ever, to keep the energy flowing. This work is needed to ensure our network remains resilient, allowing energy to get from where its generated, to the homes and businesses that need it.
I would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation whilst these necessary works take place. We will continue to keep you updated throughout the works but if you have any queries in the meantime, please email harker@nationalgrid.com or call our community relations team on 0800 319 6165 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday).
